“Girls” fans  don’t know whether to jump for joy of burst into tears. They are rejoicing at HBO just releasing a teaser trailer for the HBO show’s sixth season – but their delight is tempered by news that this will be the final season.

The trailer mentions “a last chance” and this farewell season gives the four main characters a last chance to find success in New York and go out with a happy ending.

Lena Dunham – director, creator, producer and writer for “Girls” – explained the reason for the show’s end. “I conceived of ‘Girls’ when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 — the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about — and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up,” Dunham said.

The series tackles the life experiences of four women living in New York and has gained a cult-following for its ability to be relatable. Dunham often relies on her own life for inspiration, such as her struggle with mental illness and her experiences as an intern.

The show has garnered impressive ratings and awards, including Allison Williams’ nomination for this year’s Critics’ Choice TV Awards as best supporting actress.

Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet star alongside Dunham and Williams. The on-screen chemistry between the four women has translated into a real-life friendship, which may have contributed to the show’s success. Dunham posted a three part goodbye to these girls, as well as the “Girls” show, on her Instagram.

Most of the responses on social media have been positive. In response to Dunham’s goodbye on Instagram and the HBO trailer release on Twitter, fans posted about how much they will miss the show after its six season run.

Others can’t wait to see the back of the show and expressed their relief in its end. One “Girls” hater even went so far that he got blocked from Lena Dunham on Twitter, he wrote on his account.
