Our whole lives, we have been under a rock.

We have been lived a life of security since we were tiny tots. Now that we reached a certain point in life, we have to face the fact that we are now adults. This means doing adult things that we never thought we would be doing.

As a 2019 ENTITY Mentee, I have grown to understand the adult world and grown to appreciate the knowledge I gained from being in school. One of the things adults should know is that ENTITY Academy has taught me how to boost my confidence.

I had to do things I am normally terrified of doing, like interacting with professionals. Here are tips that ENTITY has taught me on how to be a fierce female and rule the adulting world.

For this, I am referencing the dreaded resume. The first step to being a professional adult means knowing what makes you stand out.

The resume is the key to opening doors. Graphic design week taught the mentees how to sell themselves visually.

In order to stand out, the resume needs to adhere to what that job is looking for. Make the resume readable so that the employers who look at your accomplishments would automatically remember who you are. As an adult entering the workforce, I was trained to focus on keywords, layout my achievements, and talk myself up.

Make Friends

This sounds simple enough but when thrown into the workforce, adults tend to lose sight of building friendships and steer towards having acquaintances. Which is fine, there are no rules saying that acquaintances are bad.

Having friends, however, helps build a community of people who will keep you afloat in the real world. They are the people who will vouch for your incredible work ethic, remind you that you are doing the best you can, and help you reach your goals.

It’s not networking, it’s a relationship. Entering adulthood is seamless with a group of friends by your side.

Learn The Business

For the entertainment industry, having knowledge in business will guide you through the workforce smoothly. It is definitely a life skill to have as an adult: grab some books, search the web, and ask around to learn everything you can about the industry.

By navigating the business, you will understand how different areas work because something always connects with the other. For instance, if you wrote an amazing script and want it to be perfect, it is crucial to know who wants to buy the rights to your script, what companies it is going to, and who will be part of the production crew.

Learn the finance and legal jargon before optioning off your work. It’s also important to keep an open mind and learn new skills that will prepare you for the business.

ENTITY Academy was a major step forward in getting me immersed in the entertainment industry. The mentorship program taught important life skills and I made close friends. If there was one thing I can take away from this experience, it is to get out of your comfort zone and take in the opportunities.

Hopefully, new mentees take this into account as they embark on their journey with ENTITY Academy.
