PopSugar, the girl-oriented media company that delivers all the need-to-know info on the hottest trends in fashion, beauty, fitness, food, celebrities, and entertainment, came out with their own makeup line.

It all started when PopSugar founder Lisa Sugar felt that the beauty products she was using needed a makeover. She wanted to create makeup that was made with smart and thoughtfully sourced ingredients that were easy to apply, buildable, suitable for travel, and of course, fun! However, can Lisa create a top makeup brand as well as she can create one of the top media companies for women? We’re putting it to the test.

As a sufferer of sensitive skin, I am always skeptical to try new makeup. When I find a product I like, I tend to stick to it and stray away from trying anything new. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Beauty by PopSugar. It really exceeded my expectations.

Here are the products I tried and what I thought:

Be Sweet Tinted Lip Balm SPF15: $20

The Be Sweet Tinted Lip Balm SPF15 is a lip product that promises to nourish, protect, and give your lips a sheer, glimmering layer of color. Made with natural waxes, oils, antioxidants, and SPF 15, it’s described as “an experience” for your lips. It’s also free of “bad stuff” such as parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium laurel sulfate, and gluten.

After wearing the color DAYDREAMER for an entire day, I was amazed by the results. My first thought before testing it is that it would be just like the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment that also has SPF15. However, PopSugar’s version performed better in my opinion.

As someone with dry lips, products tend to make them feel crusty and uncomfortable after an hour or so. To my surprise, the Be Sweet Tinted Lip Balm lasted nicely throughout the day. It was comfortable to wear and the pigment lasted and faded evenly. Best of all, no crusty lips to report!

The only downside to the product is the price tag. Being $20, it is more on the high-end price range. If you aren’t willing to spend that kind of cash on a lip balm, there are other more affordable options you could try that would give similar results such as Burt’s Bees and Maybelline.

Be Cosmic Crystal Liquid Lip: $24

The Be Cosmic Crystal Liquid Lip is a sheer, prismatic lip topper/lip gloss that is supposed to reflect and amplify surrounding light. It promises to give your lips an amazing crystal kaleidoscope effect, be super lightweight, and feel great on the lips. It gives off a warm, mint flavor and like all of PopSugar’s other products, it is “bad stuff” free.

After putting it to the wear test, I can say I agree with all of those statements. It was extremely comfortable to wear, looked beautiful on the lips, smelled great, and worked as both a stand-alone lip gloss and a lip topper.

Again, the price is a little hefty at $24. There are brands that put out cheaper versions such as Nyx Cosmetics, but the level of quality ingredients don’t compare.

Did PopSugar make as good of a beauty brand as they do a media company?

My verdict: so far, so good! I am impressed by Beauty by PopSugar. They made some quality products with good ingredients that performed as promised. Although the prices are a little high, if you’re looking for makeup with superior performance, I believe the splurge is worth it. After trying these products, I have a lot more respect for PopSugar not only as a media company but as a beauty brand.
