soft skills

Now that my ENTITY Academy mentorship is coming to an end, it’s time to reflect on the opportunity this company has given me. At the beginning of this seven-week journey, we were told we would be learning both soft and hard skills to help us in our careers.

Here are 3 ENTITY Academy skills that really stuck with me.

1 Communication

ENTITY Academy skills and lessons

Communication is key! And I learned that a lot throughout my experience at ENTITY. A big communication ENTITY Academy skill that stuck with me was during speaker Michelle Wolf’s first lecture. She had us draw a picture using shapes and then had us describe to our partners how to draw the exact picture.

With this exercise, I learned how important communication is, especially in the workplace. Communicating with someone doesn’t always mean your point is being understood. With my partner, I thought I was communicating with her exactly how she had to do her drawing but later found out that I needed to be more specific in order for her to understand me better. I understood that in the workplace being precise in your communication is key to getting the job done correctly.

2 Relationships

ENTITY Academy also taught us the importance of building a relationship with co-workers and acquaintances. The relationships I’ve built amongst my colleagues and the speakers is a soft skill that I will take with me to my next career opportunity.

3 Networking

ENTITY Academy skills and networking

Networking, networking, networking! This was a major part I was most excited about learning. I was never taught the do’s and don’ts of networking and was always unsure how to go about it. ENTITY taught me the proper ways on how to approach someone, how to introduce yourself or how to introduce someone else. It also taught me how to reach out to anybody you feel like could give you advice.

I was able to use my networking skills to reach out to one of our speakers, Rick Schwartz. I reached out to him after his “dos and don’ts” lecture on interviewing for feedback on my resume. He was kind enough to give me advice on how I could improve it. We exchanged a few emails and even talked more in-depth about it through a phone call. If ENTITY never taught us this important soft skill I would have never known how to approach the situation for advice.

ENTITY Academy skills I learned through my internship have come to be important skills I will take with me. And for that, I thank ENTITY.
