One of the most important parts of ENTITY’s summer Writer’s Collective program was the opportunity to connect with and learn from ENTITY Academy mentors. Throughout the program, these inspirational women gave accounts of their roads to success and presentations on their respective industries. Yet, best of all, they gave valuable advice to mentees. Here are some of the best pieces of advice our ENTITY Academy mentors gave to the Writer’s Collective:

1. “Don’t be complacent. Keep the fire and don’t be afraid to change your path and follow the next thing that interests you.” – Pamela Baxter

ENTITY Academy mentor Pamela Baxter certainly knows a lot about shifting career paths and following a variety of interests. Baxter has held executive positions in the Estee Lauders companies and was President/CEO of LVMH Beauty Brands like Dior. Recently, she even founded a beauty incubator that launched the makeup brand Beauty by PopSugar. Baxter advised ENTITY Academy mentees to explore different things to avoid feeling bored with their work. According to Baxter, your interests can guide your career and lead you into exciting new roles.

2. “Always be looking for opportunities and be ready for opportunities when they present themselves.”- Ione Butler

Ione Butler is one of the ENTITY Academy mentors who best exemplifies the importance of seizing different opportunities. She has found professional success as an actress, voice-over artist, an entrepreneur in real estate, and is the founder of Uplifting Content. In her presentation, Butler emphasized the importance of taking opportunities. Additionally, she discussed the power of deciding that you want to do something awesome and then working hard to take the steps to make it happen. Don’t be afraid to go after what you want! But, you also have to put in the effort to succeed.

3. “If you’re not using words in an imaginative, clever, clear, and entertaining way, you’re wasting them.” – Merle Ginsberg

As one of the most successful print and digital freelance journalists, Merle Ginsberg certainly knows a thing or two about writing. She had plenty of tips for ENTITY Academy mentees; like how to pitch stories, break into the industry, and work with publications. But her advice about writing itself and the power of words spoke volumes to the Writer’s Collective. She suggested writing often to better understand the way we think. Ginsberg also called mentees to read everything and be observant in their daily life for inspiration. Curiosity is key to authentic and interesting writing.

Overall, it’s daunting to be a young professional trying to break into an industry or jumpstart a career. But these women and their stories serve as examples that hard work, passion, and adaptability are essential for thriving in a modern career. Advice from women who have seen and done it all is motivating and reassuring for those feeling lost in their career path. So, try seeking out advice from your own mentors, or just asking those around you about their professional journey.
