If you’re a makeup lover, like me, then you probably want to know how to apply it as well. The problem is professional makeup classes can be expensive. That’s why I like to turn to good ole YouTube for makeup advice.

YouTube is a great way to learn little tips and tricks on how to apply makeup like a pro. It’s perfect for people like me who enjoy putting on makeup as a hobby.

With so many videos to choose from, it can sometimes get hard to find a makeup tutorial that is good and resourceful. That’s why I have made a list of five different beauty gurus and YouTube videos that have some good advice for both beginner makeup lovers or for the pros.

1. Affordable Makeup Reviews

First, let’s start with affordable makeup. You don’t have to spend a ton of money for your makeup to look bomb. Drugstore makeup brands have come a long way. The tip to affordable makeup is researching it before you purchase it. Find reviews from professionals artists for affordable brands and see what their opinion on it is. Make sure it wasn’t a sponsored advertisement though, because those can be biased.

In the video listed above Jeffree Star reviews and demonstrates the affordable makeup brand, Maybelline. A lot of times I feel like I have to buy an expensive product I see beauty guru’s trying. That’s why having videos like the one above, where they try out affordable makeup is important. Searching to see if there are reviews on drugstore products before buying them is a trick I like to do. In general, reviews themselves are a good thing to look at but having a video demonstrating affordable products lets us see the real results.

Here’s a little list of some affordable makeup products that really work!

The E.L.F. Prep & Hydrate Balm is perfect for dry skin. It hydrates your face while prepping your skin for makeup application. It doesn’t make your skin oily either! This product is designed to hydrate your skin so I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who has overly oily skin. My skin is a combination of dry and oily so this product is perfect for me when I am having a dry skin day. It’s perfect for winter or if you live in an area that has low humidity. I started using this product after Nikkie Tutorials used it in one of her videos. The balm goes on thick and has a cooling sensation to it. Because of that, this is what I use under my eyes in the morning to help calm down my puffy dark circles. Click here to see Nikkie try it out!

Maybelline Fit Me! Foundation comes in 40 different shades to cover almost every skin type. This company really makes it a point to include all skin types, not just the basic light, medium, or dark. It’s clear that Maybelline also thought about skin undertones when they made this product. This is something I always look for in my foundation.

Our skin can have either cool or warm undertones or be both. Cool tones appear in people whose veins appear to be blue. People with cool tones also have a more pink/red appearance, especially in the sun. Warm tones are more copper and gold. People with warm undertones usually tan easily and have an appearance of green veins. I know we have all put on a foundation that was the perfect match and then hours later our face appears to be the wrong shade.

This is something that happens when we choose a foundation that has the wrong undertones. Personally, I have cool undertones. I sunburn easily and turn red just from walking up the stairs too fast. When I use the right foundation color with the wrong undertone color, my skin turns orange. Because of the great shade range from Maybelline’s foundation, this doesn’t happen to me when I use their products.

There is nothing better than a GOOD liquid lipstick. Some matte or velvet lipsticks are so drying and they just don’t look good after a while. This lipstick is a staple in my makeup bag. In fact, NYX Lip Lingerie goes on matte but feels like nothing is on your lips at all. This is one of the only liquid lipsticks that I have found that doesn’t crack or feel drying. Indeed, another good thing about this product is that when it starts to wear off, it isn’t noticeable. While it is long-lasting, it also leaves your lips gracefully. Lip Lingerie does transfer a little bit, but that is better than having drying lips, in my opinion. Also, it is considered a matte lipstick but again it does feel more like a velvet liquid lip.

ColourPop’s new summer eyeshadow palette California Love is only $18 for 12 eyeshadows! Notably, I am a huge fan of ColourPop products, especially their pressed eyeshadows. This is because they blend so easily and are full of pigment. ColourPop is also such a fun brand because they collaborate with brands and influencers to create new products. Right now some of the collabs going on Kathleen Lights, Zoella, and even Disney. Each of these collaborations has a different style.

Kathleen Lights collection is themed off of Zodiac signs. There’s a different color theme for each of the signs. On the site, there is even a Zodiac quiz to match you with your makeup if you don’t know what your sign is. My sign is Capricorn so the colors in this bundle are more earth tones because this is an earth sign. Doing a collaboration like this is unique and makes the product a little more desirable to buy. The price is great as well! The whole Capricorn bundleis only $12.

Zoella’s collaboration with ColourPop gives the word brunch a whole new meaning. This collection is filled with brightly colored packaging with adorable pictures of popular brunch items. The makeup itself has warm neutral tones mixed with shimmers and one bright blue color. This collection is perfect for the spring and summer.

I am absolutely obsessed with ColourPop’s Disney line. This collaboration is for all the Disney lovers because you’re never too old to love Disney. When they first came out with this collection they just had the Princesses but then they relaunched with the Villains as well.

To sum up, my list of affordable makeup staples ends with Ipsy. This brand is perfect for people who are interested in makeup but like trying and buying new things. Ipsy is a monthly subscription-based service that gives the customer five sample products for only $10. You take a survey on their website on your preferences to get started and they send you things they know you will enjoy. I love Ipsy! #notsponsered

2. Refinery29’s Shadow Lash

This video changed my life forever. Refinery29 did a makeup tutorial on how makeup was done in the 1950s. In particular, one thing stood out in this –Drop. Shadows.

If you aren’t aware of what this is, I’m so happy to share it with you. If you’re a cat wing eyeliner gal like me, this is a trick that will make your lashes look 10 times as long as they did before.

First, you’ll need a neutral eyeshadow color. I usually use a mocha brown color.

Second, grab a small angled brush, kind of like an eyebrow brush, and dip it in your eyeshadow.

Third, apply the shadow to your lower lash line parallel to your eyeliner wing. Make sure the length of your shadow line doesn’t extend the length of your wing.

This trick creates the illusion of a shadow of your lashes on your face giving the appearance of fuller and longer-looking lashes.

3. Glitter Eyeliner Glam

Watching YouTubers like NikkieTutorials has really helped me grow in my makeup skills. She has many tutorials on glam looks but one thing that she does in this video is glitter eyeliner. She takes it up a notch and even makes it two different colors.

If you want to make a glitter-winged-two-toned-eyeliner (what a mouth full…) then you need to pick two colors you want to work with. You’ll need a liquid base in one color, and loose glitter in another color. NYX offers liquid eyeliner in many colors like pink, yellow, blue and red. But, if you don’t have any and don’t want to buy them, you can always use a matte liquid lipstick instead.

Once you pick your colors you’ll apply your eyeliner in a wing. Then you will take a glitter primer and put it on near the inner corner of your eyes. After that you will take your loose glitter and pack it on to the primer and just like magic, you’re now glitter glam!

4. Skin Care Is Everything

Before having a perfect makeup look, your skin has to be prepped and ready. Reading the labels on our makeup products is something we don’t think to do often but is something that needs to be considered more.

I’m sure that by now we have all heard the drama of the Kylie Skin Care and the walnut face scrub. According to an article written by TODAY, Dr. Adam Friedman, interim chair of the dermatology department at George Washington University, states that “walnut scrubs can create tiny tears in the top layer of the skin that allow irritants and allergens to break through a layer essentially serving as “an armor.”

ENTITY shares how you can take makeup classes for free.

Our skin, especially on our face, is very sensitive and if we want our makeup to look like we have been taking makeup classes, then we need to treat it like a professional does. One thing that is a must in my makeup routine is dry brushing. This is what I use to exfoliate my skin instead of harmful chemicals or sharp food bits. Dry brushing not only helps exfoliate your skin, but it also creates blood circulation, helps drain your lymphatic system, and even wakes up your nervous system and makes you feel more alert and energized. It also makes your skin feel super soft! You don’t want to dry brush every day but only a few times a week.

In the video above, Kourtney Kardashian is going over her daily makeup routine. She focuses on skincare heavily. She mentioned the app/website Skin Deep which is a great tool to use to find out about what is in the products we are using and information on them. All you have to do is search for any product and it will pop up with information on it. Skin Deep lets you know if the product is a hazard, if it’s toxic, and more. I like to find more natural skincare brands so that I am not putting harsh chemicals on my face. Sometimes I feel like the chemicals in certain face soap feel like it is drying out my skin so I like to use this site to help see if what the products I am putting on my face are good for me or not.

5. Natural Makeup Looks

While being glam is fun, it isn’t always the look we are going for. One of my favorite makeup looks is a natural one.

It may sound counter-intuitive but the “no-makeup makeup look” is quick and helps make your face pop a bit.

In the video above James Charles goes over what his easy makeup routine is for when you want to feel natural but don’t want to go full glam. Makeup classes sometimes don’t focus on minimal makeup looks because it seems to be an easy thing to do. I find that when I want to have a natural look it is harder than doing a full glam look. Finding a balance between not enough makeup and too much makeup can be hard.

Natural makeup looks are done by making your features pop with little makeup. This could be by using concealer under your eyes to get rid of any dark circles, a tinted moisturizer, defining your brows with some brow gel, a tinted lip balm and applying mascara. Oh, and don’t forget highlighter! It isn’t a lot but it makes me feel a little better about wearing a natural look without the time and effort that a full makeup look takes.

Although I’m sure taking professional makeup classes will get you more experience, practicing with YouTube tutorials is a good way to gain skills for free. All in all, makeup is a fun way to express who we are. Whether you want to spend money on makeup classes or try to teach yourself, in the end, feeling comfortable in your own techniques is what matters. Practice makes perfect so find a friend who will let you do their makeup or even just practice on yourself, either way, remember to have fun!
