Entity discusses natural ways to relieve pain.

Whether it’s that time of month or you have a killer headache (or both), no woman goes without at least mild pain on a day-to-day basis. Usually you resort to painkillers and call it a day, but there are always ways to relieve pain without the pills. Alternatives can be healthier for your body and result in less pain or fewer side effects.

Consider these five ways to lessen or relieve the pain without taking those painkillers.

1 Relax by meditation and deep breathing.

Deep breathing and meditation helps your body relax, which in turn relieves pain and promotes a healthy body. This method is especially effective when you are experience stress-related pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, meditating is not a complete replacement for medical treatment, but it will help manage your symptoms. There are many ways to meditate, but the main goal with meditation is to focus on your rhythm of your breathing and eliminate the distracting world around you.

2 Don t smoke and reduce your alcohol intake.

Smoking and excessive alcohol use is never healthy when you aren’t experiencing pain, so it’s especially important to avoid when you are in pain. Smoking can worsen painful circulation problems and alcohol aggravates your sleeping issues. If you already struggle to sleep because of your pain, drinking alcohol will certainly not help; it may relieve pain for a short time, but it will make you more susceptible to pain after its effects wear off. Everyday Health says, “Smoking can interfere with pain management and chronic pain treatment by causing or exacerbating painful medical conditions, increasing pain sensitivity and perception, and interfering with pain medication.”

3 Try to exercise.

Depending on what kind of condition you are in, exercise is a natural way to get rid of pain. Even light exercise can reduce pain, as physical activity releases endorphins in your brain that boost your mood and keep you healthy. In addition, exercising keeps your muscles strong and can prevent any further injury or pain. Even just thirty minutes of aerobic exercise can make a difference. In an interview with The New York Times, Dr. Vijay Vad said, “The overall consensus for exercise therapy is that it has a positive impact. It can be something simple – it doesn’t have to be fancy machines or stretches.”

4 Use heat and ice.

As simple as it seems, heating and cooling where you feel discomfort can help to relieve pain. There are specific times to use either heat or ice. One tried and true method is to place a cold pack on the head for a short time to relieve the pain of a headache. A cold pack on a strained muscle, tendon or ligament will help reduce swelling. If you have arthritis, applying heat can help relieve pain. Remember that if a certain part of your body is hurting, using heat or ice is the immediate answer.

5 Switch to an anti-inflammatory diet.

Since inflammation and pain are linked, some foods will cause your body to swell up more than others. Eating an anti-inflammatory foods will help reduce pain says Dr. Vijay Vad. He looks at supplements with known data for certain problems, like glucosamine and chondroitin and vitamin D. Foods such as tuna, dark leafy greens, nuts, tomatoes, beets and garlic are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, according to Health magazine. Changing up your diet and focusing on foods that help relieve inflammation will help you deal with pain in a healthy and effective manner.

So next time you reach for your pain pills, stop to think about what other types of exercises or practices may help. With a little experimenting and effort, your pain management plan can totally transform!
