Relationships August 23, 2017
Because memes make the language of love.
How many times have you heard different variations of the following phrase:
“If he doesn’t have good (style, hair, face, romantic capability, etc.), it’s like, not even worth it.”
This “deal breaker mentality” leaves a lot of wrong things to look for in a guy — which may not be the best way to step into a new relationship. But what if we looked at relationships this way:
“If he has a good sense of humor, never let that man go.”
It may not be the best plan of action, but hey, it’s definitely a start. A man with a good sense of humor is not only non-boring, but humor gives him a huge advantage over basically any other potential bachelor.
Here are a few reasons why being a weird couple beats being a normal couple any day.
When your partner in crime is basically one of the funniest people you’ve ever met (and you’re not biased, not in the slightest) it’s really hard to sweat about the little things. A good sense of humor is one of the best ways to not be manic over every little thing that goes wrong.
Whether it be traffic, a bad grade or even a stubbed toe, a funny best friend can basically make you laugh about anything.
Plus, being a weird couple, you can both be ridiculous in public with no one even batting an eye. Well some people might, but they’re just killjoys.
What is love, if not irrelevant memes? Memes bring out the best in people, and it reveals their own, specific sense of humor. Meme curating is one of the respected art forms in the millennial age (an untested theory, but an educated guess), and an experienced meme curator can be extremely alluring.
Who else would you send that rotating picture of Scooby Doo on a bicycle? Absolutely no one. Except maybe your best friend, but besides her, absolutely no one.
Have you ever tried to be stubbornly miserable while watching an episode of “New Girl?” Yeah, it’s difficult. The characters on sitcoms have typically tiny problems, and their whimsical problem-solving is almost impossible to witness without the occasional chuckle.
A boyfriend with an intact funny bone can have the same effect on your down days. He’ll know exactly which YouTube video to pull up to turn that frown into a reluctant smirk.
It can be an infant’s confirmation, a lecture on macroeconomics, a silent film you accidentally attended, you name it. You have access to a personal commentary that beats any DVD Special Feature. You become an expert people watcher, silently narrating the every thought of the unsuspected guest.
Does this make you look like a really, really weird couple? Yes. Is it worth it? Oh yes.
Have you ever been with a guy who doesn’t really find anything funny, so you feel compelled to act solemn and serious around him? Luckily, you are free from this obligation when you date someone who is inherently ridiculous.
You can try any joke on him, whether it be the stupidest pun ever created, or the most brilliant play on words in the history of humor.
The best thing about your goofy boyfriend is that he’s literally so unpredictable. He might order his meal in a British accent. He might break out a Bruce Willis impression. He might even reference an inside joke from three years ago completely out of context.
You laugh at all of these things because you’re dating the guy, and you find him hilarious no matter how funny his jokes may or may not be. But yeah, your weird couple dates look really odd to the outside world. But you literally don’t even care.
The early stages of your relationship are straight out of an awkward romantic comedy. You both suck at flirting, so you essentially share the same romantic language: the anti-flirt. You told him he’s gross. He told you your shorts are weird. You said you don’t like his hair. He says he doesn’t like your face.
But somehow, two weeks later, you were stupidly, madly in love. How, you may ask? You have absolutely no idea.
In my experience, kids tend to gravitate to the most genuine person in the room… as long as they’re super fun, like Uncle Jessie from “Full House”. Although hilarity and being good with children do not always go hand-in-hand, it’s not uncommon for hilarious people to have overly active imaginations.
Whenever he comes along to your family functions, you can always depend on him to have every child entranced by his antics within the first ten minutes of your arrival. By the time you reach the food table, he’s already pretending to be a rocket ship with two of your nephews. Seriously, how does he do this? It’s like a super power.
This is one of the lesser-known weird couple benefits. Parental approval was not even an issue with your bizarre beau. Within the first two minutes of your boyfriend meeting your father, they were already cracking jokes about fishing lines and car tires.
He seems to speak “dad humor,” a dialect of funniness you’ve never quite grasped, nor understood. And yet, within moments, he has picked up the new language like you pick up a dropped wallet. Seriously, where does he learn these things?
So basically, if your beau has a strong goofiness factor, that’s a strong sign of a dealmaker in a relationship. Although it doesn’t necessarily guarantee the success of a relationship, you can be sure that you will not be totally bored for the duration of your time together.
You might also have sore abs from laughing. But if you’re okay with a low-key ab workout, then you’re good to go.
