No shade to my peeps in relationships. Do you.
It seems as though everyone wants to be in a relationship.
And there’s nothing wrong with that. Finding a person that shares common interests with you while both of you genuinely want to be around each other sounds like a win-win situation.
I’m 20 years old and have never been in a relationship. And, I’m happy to say that I LOVE BEING SINGLE. Is that weird? I mean, sure, there was one guy that was a potential boyfriend, but then that went to shit. In all seriousness though, I love being single and I love that I’m okay with it.
So here are a few reasons why I love being single:
I love spending good, quality time with friends and family. But the truth is, I also love spending time by myself. If I can spend an evening alone watching good TV and eating delicious food, then I’m all for it.
Obviously people in relationships can have alone time (duh, it’s kinda crucial) but having alone time when single just seems easier. I don’t have to tell anyone, “Hey, I’m going off the grid for 48 hours… I’m totally fine. I just need me-time.”
This sounds harsh, but here’s the thing, when I say I can be selfish, I mean with my bed, my pizza and the TV remote. I grew up being told sharing is caring (it was literally the slogan for one of the elementary schools I attended), but the power of being selfish is well, awesome.
I can sleep spread out like a starfish. I can eat an entire box of pizza if I so choose. I can watch whatever I want, whether it’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” or a Dodger’s game. It’s my choice.
We all know that with relationships (whether platonic or romantic) starting a show together means having to finish it together. And let’s be honest… WHO HAS THE PATIENCE TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER PERSON TO CONTINUE THE SHOW?!
Well, everyone knows that I don’t. I love being able to watch a show and not have to worry about whether or not my boyfriend will be upset that I finished the show without him. This is a guilt-free zone.
Personally, natural hygiene is an important thing for me. But honestly, some days I just can’t be bothered or I forget. It’s so nice just being me, myself and my unshaven legs some days. I don’t think people that don’t shave their legs on the daily realize how much time it adds to showering. It’s seriously like an extra five minutes. And when you’re in a time crunch, every minute matters.
Side note: If you’re in a relationship and you forget to shave your legs or can’t be bothered, and someone has a problem with that… SAY GOODBYE.
I love being single because I’m in the process of becoming my own person.
This means learning what I like and what I dislike. I feel like people in relationships know who they are and what they’re bringing to the table. In my case, I’m just beginning to learn that. It’s important for me to be my own, whole person before any relationship.
When I hear “Single Ladies” by Beyonce come on, I become a new woman. I love that song. Also, it’s an empowering thing to see all the single ladies rush to the dance floor and start waving their hand in the air while pointing to their ring finger.
Lastly, one of my favorite things about being single is that I can focus on myself. This is like becoming my own person, but it’s about me being my main priority.
I genuinely love being able to prioritize myself and my career. I am young and I’m in no rush to be in a relationship. If it happens, cool. But right now I’m in a place where I want to begin establishing myself and my career.
Well, there it is.
Being single isn’t as bad as some people make it seem. I love it. If you’re in a relationship and love it, then enjoy it. If you’re single and love it, then keep enjoying that.
Whatever it is, just make sure that you’re happy.
