Sometimes, DIY projects are the way to go. They’re cheap, fun and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you make something with your own hands is like no other. So next time you’re in the beauty aisle at Target, think twice about stocking up on expensive, chemical-ridden makeup wipes. Instead, try a homemade recipe to make your own all-natural, cost-free makeup remover.

One of the most effective homemade aids in removing makeup (specifically eye makeup) is jojoba oil. If you’re not quite sure about the origins of jojoba oil, it comes from the seed of the simmondsia chinensis plant, native to California, Arizona and parts of Mexico. However, most any other plant or food based oil will work just as well.

Celeb Julianne Hough shares her favorite recipe for homemade makeup remover. She advises combining equal portions (two tablespoons) of jojoba oil, witch hazel and water in a container of your choice. Shake your ingredients to mix and you’ll be well on your way to creating a moisturizing and cheap makeup remover. It won’t sting your eyes and you’ll feel good about putting products on your face that aren’t chock full of ominous-sounding chemicals.

If you’re feeling crazy, you can also make homemade makeup remover pads. These pads are reusable so not only are you saving big bucks by not shelling out cash for name-brand makeup wipes in convenience stores, you’re doing your part to save the planet.

Get any sort of scrap fabric you have around the house (preferably something soft and plush) and find a circular object to trace on to the fabric. Draw two circles on the fabric, cut them out and pin them together. Here comes the slightly tricky part – sew the two pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine or old-fashioned needle and thread. Once you’re done, you’ll have soft, reusable pads perfect for removing your makeup.
