Blackheads are very irritating and no one wants them on their face. But before we get into how to get rid of blackheads, we first need to understand what they are.

The little black dots on your nose are not dirt. Usually people associate blackheads with dirt because they think the products they use, such as makeup, leave dirt behind. Or they think the air is bringing dirt into their skin.

Although the second one is kind of close, it’s still not entirely true.

Blackheads occur when oil and dead skin block your pores. The reason your pores become black is because when the dead skin and oil are exposed to the air, it burns and creates a black, waxy texture. No, thank you.

If you’re as bothered about this as we are, here’s how you can get rid of unwanted blackheads.

1 Blackhead Strips

Pore strips are oddly satisfying. They take all the gunk off your nose and it feels like you’ve accomplished the impossible.

Although this is a temporary fix to your problems, it can be a great help during an emergency. This method is recommended once a week and works best when paired with an exfoliating regime.

Many brands that won’t make you broke include Bioré Strips ($8), Target Pore Strips ($6) and Sephora Pore Strips ($3). But before you rush to your closest drugstore, if you have a sunburn or irritated breakouts, it’s best to wait until they heal.

2 Steam Your Skin

This is the most inexpensive method out there. And the best part is, it actually works!

Grab yourself a bowl of hot water and hold your face above it to steam your skin. This allows your pores to loosen up before pulling your blackheads out.

It is recommended you steam your skin before picking your blackheads because you’re more likely to irritate your skin by pulling them before loosening them up.

You can also soak a towel in hot water and place it on your face to get the same effects.

3 Use a Comedone Extractor

You’re probably wondering what the heck a comedone extractor even is. Well, its a tool that dermatologists use to take out blackheads. It’s kind of like a tweezer for your blackheads.

And though it looks intimidating, a comedone extractor is far safer than trying to pick at your blackheads with your fingers. After washing your face, put the loop over the blackhead and press down gently. The blackhead should come out pretty quickly.

These tools are also relatively cheap, depending where you get it. On Amazon, they sell for as low as $8.

4 Homemade Remedies

Why spend extra money when you can use the products you already have at home?

One home remedy you can use is egg whites. Proteins that are found in eggs can kill the bacteria that cause breakouts. Apply multiple layers of egg whites in the affected area and wash off it with warm water.

And if you don’t want egg whites, you can also use honey. Since honey is very sticky, it can help pull out your blackheads the way a pore strip would. Warming up the honey beforehand allows it to really get inside your pores before it hardens.

5 Over-the-counter products

There are dozens of over-the-counter products that you can buy at your local pharmacies. But you need to figure out what kind of skin you have before determining which one to buy. Whether you have dry, oily, normal or sensitive skin, choose the product that matches your skin type.

And if you’re having trouble narrowing it down, some of the top blackhead treatment brands for cleansers, lotions and spot treatments include Bioré, Neutrogena, Clean & Clear and Clearasil. What’s also great about all of these brands is that they are quality products with relatively low prices.

Who wouldn’t want that?

We hope this has helped answer your question on how to get rid of blackheads. But if you’ve tried all of these methods and still can’t seem to get them out of your skin, it’s better to consult a dermatologist before causing irritation and making the blackheads worse.
